Daniel Johnston, de manisch-depressieve cultfiguur uit Austin Texas, wordt in één adem genoemd met geniale maar getroubleerde geesten als Syd Barrett, Brian Wilson of Roky Erickson. Johnstons leven is één grote strijd met de demonen in zijn hoofd. Maar hij wordt ook beschouwd als één van de belangrijkste singer-songwriters van de afgelopen 20 jaar. Ook al is hij vooral bekend vanwege de bewonderende commentaren van rockhelden als Butthole Surfers (wier Paul Leary zijn bekendste plaat Fun produceerde), Sonic Youth en Kurt Cobain (die vaak T-shirts droeg met Johnstons artwork). Zijn uitgebreide oeuvre met meer dan 500 nummers werd gecoverd door Tom Waits, Flaming Lips, Pearl Jam, Beck, Sparklehorse, Yo La Tengo, Teenage Fanclub, ... Typische kenmerken: een kinderlijk-naïeve stijl en sombere thematiek.
